2010 Michigan Land Values and Leasing Rates AgEcon
Wittenberg, Eric; Harsh, Stephen B..
Land is a natural resource that is valued for many reasons. Farmers utilize land to earn their livelihood and as a store of wealth for future retirement. Potential rural residents have increasingly sought open space for a home site and pursuit of a lifestyle. Developers seek financial opportunities to invest in and develop it for non-farm uses. Recreational needs such as hunting are often met through use of land. For some, land is viewed as an investment and a hedge against inflation. This myriad of demands for land combined with its fixed supply continually alters its market price, which is a monetary measure of its perceived value.

2010 Michigan Upper Peninsula Dairy Business Analysis Summary AgEcon
Wittenberg, Eric; Wolf, Christopher A..
This report summarizes the financial and production records of 16 dairy farms across the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan. To be included, the farms must have produced at least 50 percent of gross cash farm income from milk and dairy animal sales. The records came from Michigan State University’s TelFarm project and Farm Credit Service system in Michigan. Farm records checked for accuracy. While considerable variation in the data exists, average values are reported in the summary tables and discussion that follows.

2010 North Dakota Agricultural Outlook: Representative Farms, 2010-2019 AgEcon
Taylor, Richard D.; Koo, Won W.; Swenson, Andrew L..
Net farm income for most representative farms in 2019 is projected to be lower than in 2009. Low-profit farms, which comprise 20% of the farms in the study, may not have financial resiliency to survive without off-farm income. Commodity prices are expected to increase slowly from current levels. Commodity yields are projected to increase at historical trend-line rates and production expenses are expected to return to normal growth rates. Debt-to-asset ratios for all farms except for the low profit farm will decrease slightly throughout the forecast period. Debt-to-asset ratios for the low-profit farms are expected to increase to about 0.70.

2010 Outlook for the U.S. and World Corn and Soybean Industries, 2009-2019 AgEcon
Taylor, Richard D.; Koo, Won W..
This report evaluates the United States and world corn and soybean markets for the 2009-2019 time period using the Global Corn and Soybean Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, weather conditions, and technological change. The major influence in the corn market will be U.S. corn based ethanol production. If the production of corn based ethanol remains strong, corn prices will likely remain strong. However, if the U.S. Federal government subsidies or mandates change, the world corn market could be negatively impacted. Under the current assumptions in the model, corn price is expected to remain in a range between $3.70 and $4.10 per bushel. The level of Chinese...

2010 Outlook of the U.S. and World Sugar Markets, 2009-2019 AgEcon
Taylor, Richard D.; Koo, Won W..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world sugar markets for 2009-2019 using the Global Sugar Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, population growth, weather conditions, and technological changes. Both the U.S. and world sugar economies are predicted to remain stable over the next ten years in spite of the 2007-08 increase in world oil prices. That increase in oil price caused an increase in the conversion of sugar into ethanol in Brazil, while other exporting countries increased their production of sugar in response to higher sugar prices. Sugar prices remained strong in 2009 as the world’s economies recover slowly from the recession. World demand for sugar is expected to...

2010 Outlook of the U.S. and World Wheat Industries, 2009-2019 AgEcon
Taylor, Richard D.; Koo, Won W..
This report evaluates the U.S. and world wheat markets for the 2009-2019 time period using the Global Wheat Policy Simulation Model. This analysis is based on a series of assumptions about general economic conditions, agricultural policies, weather conditions, and technological change. Both the U.S. and world wheat economies are predicted to remain relatively healthy for the next ten years. World demand for both common and durum wheat are expected to remain strong. The price levels in 2007, 2008 and 2009 might not be maintained in 2010 and the future because increased wheat and corn production in 2008 and 2009 and reduced demand for corn for ethanol production which pressures all commodity prices. World trade volumes of...

2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid as an alternative auxin for rooting of vine rootstock cuttings Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Tofanelli,Mauro Brasil Dias; Freitas,Pytágoras Leal; Pereira,Giuliano Elias.
Viticulture is an important agricultural activity in semiarid northeastern Brazil, and the quality and ease of vine propagation are very important in this context. This study evaluated the use of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) as an alternative to indolebutyric acid (IBA) in the rooting of vine rootstock cuttings. The trial was conducted at the Universidade Federal de Sergipe (São Cristóvão-SE) between January and March 2010 with cuttings of the rootstocks of 'IAC-766', 'IAC-572', and 'Paulsen 1103' treated with 2,4-D or IBA applied at concentrations of 0, 1000, 2000, or 3000 rng-L-1 for 5 s and planted in a field on washed sand. At 56 days after planting, the percentages of rooted, sprouted, callused, and dead...

2(5H)-Furanone: a prospective strategy for biofouling-control in membrane biofilm bacteria by quorum sensing inhibition BJM
Ponnusamy,Kannan; Paul,Diby; Kim,Young Sam; Kweon,Ji Hyang.
Biofouling of membranes demands costly periodic cleaning and membrane replacement. A sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for maintenance is not available and would be of great interest for many purposes including economical. As complex biofilm formation by environmental strains is the major cause of biofouling and biofilm formation in most cases are controlled by N-Acylhomoserine lactone (AHL)mediated Quorum Sensing (QS). An effort was made to understand the appropriateness of 2(5H)-furanone, to use against biofouling of membranes. QS inhibition activity by 2(5H)-furanone was studied using bioindicator strains and known AHLs of different acyl chain lengths. The biofilm inhibition was studied by growth analysis on polystyrene plate of...

2D vortex interaction in a non-uniform flow ArchiMer
Perrot, Xavier; Carton, Xavier.
In a two-dimensional incompressible fluid, we study the interaction of two like-signed Rankine vortices embedded in a steady shear/strain flow. The numerical results of vortex evolutions are compared with the analytical results for point vortices. We show the existence of vortex equilibria, and of merger for initial distances larger than those without external flow. The evolutions depend on the initial orientation of the vortices in the external flow.
